When Disaster Strikes, Food Lion Is There

Disaster can strike anytime, anywhere. These events can have devastating effects from widespread floods to power outages to homes in despair, and often leave thousands of neighbors struggling to recover. And after disaster strikes, normal can seem a long way away.

That’s why it’s so important to us be there for our towns and cities when disaster strikes. We’re here for our neighbors in need before, during and after the storm.

We understand that while it’s not always possible, it’s important to prepare for a disaster as much as one can, whether that’s stocking up on water, single serve meals or batteries. We monitor the weather closely, and send more of these critical items to stores in harm’s way ahead of the storm.

And we’re here for our national disaster relief partner, the American Red Cross, and local first responders as well.

Just recently, in preparation of Hurricane Dorian, we donated truckloads of food and water to Red Cross staging areas in Charleston, S.C., and Durham, N.C., to be distributed to local disaster shelters, ensuring that evacuees and relief workers have what they need to ride out the storm.

We’re here after the disaster, as well.

Last year, when Hurricanes Florence and Michael struck many of our local towns and cities, we were there. We donated more than $400,000 in food, water, gift cards and cash donations to our food bank partners and neighbors as they recovered.  We also teamed up with the Charlotte Hornets and Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina in Charlotte, N.C., to pack 5,000 disaster boxes for our neighbors in the greater Wilmington, N.C.-area returning to their homes, as well as donated gift cards to first responders to ensure those neighbors, who were risking their lives, had access to the resources they need.  

We care about our neighbors in the towns and cities we serve, and it’s important to us to be there when our communities need us most, even long after the storm has left. This can be through additional product donations to pop-up markets in areas affected by the disaster.  

And we also frequently accept financial donations at each of our stores after a significant disaster event to benefit the Red Cross, because we know our customers who were not impacted want to support affected communities as well.

At Food Lion, caring for our communities is a part of who we are. We’re proud to be there for our associates and customers who are impacted by disaster, because we believe that part of being a good neighbor is being there when our local towns and cities need us most.
