National Fresh Fruit and Vegetables Month

June is National Fresh Fruit and Vegetables Month.  As we all know, fruits and vegetables provide a variety of nutrients, vitamins, minerals, and fiber, all while remaining naturally low in calories, fat and sodium. In addition, they lower your risk of developing certain diseases and help you maintain a healthy weight. They are an important choice to add to your plate at every meal.

Did you know that fruits and vegetables are also one of the top three most requested items at food banks, according to Feeding America.  That is why it is so important for food banks to receive fresh produce donations.  One-way Food Lion does this is through our Food Retail Rescue program. When we have food that doesn’t meet our selling standards but is still safe and healthy to consume, we donate it to local feeding agencies in your town or city. All our stores are partnered with a local feeding agency that helps to feed your hungry neighbors.  Since 2014, we have donated more than 262 million meals through this program.

So this summer, if you are looking for a way to help your neighbors in need, consider donating some fresh fruit and vegetables to your local food pantry.  That way, we can ensure all of our hungry neighbors have access to healthy options.
