Pets bring so much joy into our lives. We play, relax and snuggle together, plus make wonderful memories that last a lifetime. And this month is all about those pets that we love so very much. That’s right! May is National Pet Month.

How can you celebrate together? That’s a great question and one we’ve answered in this very blog! In fact, we’ve detailed four ways to celebrate National Pet Month, from quality time to making homemade treats and more. Now, let’s dig into the ideas!

1) Make time for playtime.

One of the best ways to celebrate National Pet Month with your furry friend is simply playing together. After all, your pet loves to play and spend time with you. It’s one of the highlights of their day and a great exercise source for your pet - both physically and mentally. So, grab their favorite toy and enjoy some quality time playing together.

You can also pick up a new toy from your local Food Lion to make this idea for celebrating National Pet Month extra special.

2) Whip up a batch of homemade dog treats.

If you have a dog in the family, this second way to celebrate National Pet Month is something you may want to treat your four-legged friend this holiday (literally). So, this year, make a batch of homemade dog treats! You’ll only need four ingredients and just under 30 minutes of prep and cooking time and these peanut butter dog treats will be ready to give your pup to enjoy (after they cool, of course). Here’s what you need to make this recipe:

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/2 cup all-natural creamy peanut butter

With your ingredients measured, you’ll first combine the flour, eggs and peanut butter together, followed by the water, one tablespoon at a time. Once a dough forms, you can roll it out on wax paper with flour sprinkled overtop or on your counter (also with some flour to keep the dough from sticking)

After rolling the dough to 1/4-inch thickness, use a dog bone-shaped cookie cutter to make each treat. You could also use a heart-shaped cutter or any of your favorite shapes. Then, place them on a greased cookie sheet and bake for 20 minutes. Let them cool on a cooling rack for several minutes until they’re no longer warm to the touch, and these treats made with love are ready to give your dog to enjoy.

3) Give your pet a little gift.

For our third way to celebrate National Pet Month, we suggest giving your pet a gift. And we have some specific ideas for your pup, the cat or your bird or fish. Take a look below!

  • Gifts for your pup: plush or chew toys, treats or a new collar
  • Purr-fect presents for the cat: catnip toys, treats or a new flavor of canned food
  • Gifts for your fish or bird: a fresh container of fish flakes or birdseed

And besides your pet totally loving these gift ideas, another great thing about them is that you can pick them up during your next visit to Food Lion! So, while you’re shopping for your

4) Stay home for quality time.

As we mentioned above, spending quality time with you is the highlight of the day for your pets. After all, they love you and just want to be close by as much as possible. So, for celebrating National Pet Month, make a point to stay home with your pet at least one day a week or a couple of days in the month. Take your dog for a nice long walk through the neighborhood, enjoy an afternoon catnap together and so on.

You can also enjoy a backyard picnic as a family if your pet can go outside with you. Otherwise, make an indoor picnic instead. Although your pet won’t be eating the same food as you, it can be fun to pack a little bit of their cat or dog food in your picnic basket as well so they can enjoy a meal with you.
