Halloween will be here before we know it. By now, you probably have costumes picked out, a few bags of candy purchased and stashed away and your fall holiday activities planned. From pumpkin carving to watching scary movies, there are so many things you can do together as a family to celebrate the holiday. And that includes making some scrumptious Halloween recipes too!

In this blog, we’ll give you some family-friendly Halloween dishes that look festive and taste great. Plus, they’re easy to make and get the kids involved. Oh, and did we mention that each Halloween recipe is made with five ingredients or less? That means that they’re low-cost as well. Talk about something to celebrate, right?

Halloween Recipe #1: Candy Corn Fruit Parfait

Candy Corn Fruit Parfait

Candy corn is an iconic fall confection, but if you’re looking for a candy-free treat for Halloween, then look no further than our Candy Corn Fruit Parfait. Capturing the classic yellow, orange and white colors of the candy, these fruit cups are festive and can be ready to serve in just five quick minutes. That makes them perfect for days when you’re a little pressed for time but still want to celebrate the holiday with a delicious and refreshing snack.

All you need is some glass or plastic cups (so that you can see the bright candy corn colors), along with canned pineapple and mandarin oranges, plus whipped cream. That’s it! And if you want to save even more when crafting this affordable Halloween recipe, look for Food Lion brand canned fruit when shopping for your ingredients at your neighborhood store!

Recipe Tip: If you’re making this together as a family, place the drained canned fruit in separate dishes instead of scooping it directly out of the cans to keep little hands from sharp edges.

Halloween Recipe #2: Crescent Mummy Dogs

Crescent Mummy Dogs

Our second recipe idea is spooky and perfect for lunch or even dinner! These Crescent Mummy Dogs are a play on the family favorite pigs-in-a-blanket dish and are made with crescent roll dough, American cheese, hot dogs and butter-flavored cooking spray.

The key to making this Halloween recipe look like mummies is preparing and wrapping the crescent roll dough differently. Instead of using a whole large triangle of dough, you’ll cut long strips, then get the kiddos to help wrap those around your hot dogs until you’ve covered them. It’s that easy to take a classic pigs-in-a-blanket and get it ready for Halloween.

Recipe Tip: To make these Crescent Mummy Dogs look even more mummy-like, leave a space one-quarter of the way from the top and let a little of the hot dog poke through. Then, add a couple of dots of yellow mustard for the mummy’s eyes.

Halloween Recipe #3: Frankenstein Kiwi Pops

Frankenstein Kiwi Pops

With this Halloween recipe, you and your family get to be Dr. Frankenstein as you craft your own edible kiwi creatures. To put together these bite-sized treats, you’ll need the following ingredients from your local Food Lion:

  • Semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • Cocoa butter or vegetable shortening
  • White chocolate chips
  • Kiwi

You’ll also need popsicle sticks or wooden skewers, as well as a piping bag to draw the stitches and silly faces with melted chocolate on your Frankenstein Kiwi Pops. Ready to get started making this festive snack? Snag the step-by-step directions on our recipe portal

Recipe Tip: Want to skip the step of melting the chocolate and using a piping bag? You can also use black cake decorating gel instead! You just won’t get as much chocolatey flavor, but it will still be just as sweet and fresh.

Halloween Recipe #4: Vampire Float

Vampire Float

Root beer floats are a dessert many of us know and love, but this Halloween version is gooey, creamy and the color of a vampire’s favorite drink. And that is precisely why we call it a Vampire Float

To make these sweet drinks for the whole family, you’ll start by placing two scoops of your go-to brand of vanilla ice cream (although we think Food Lion brand is pretty delicious). Then, it’s time to pour red soda over the top of your ice cream. And don’t forget the strawberry syrup rim!

For a final touch, top your float with some whipped cream and an extra drizzle of strawberry syrup. Now, all you need are some plastic fangs and a black cape.

Halloween Recipe #5: Marshmallow Ghost Cookies

Our last Halloween recipe is hauntingly scrumptious. With spooky white chocolate-dipped ghosts on top of packaged chocolate chip cookies, it’s almost scary how easy it is to make these tasty treats.

Of course, you can make your own chocolate chip cookies as well if you have a little extra time. But, if that’s not the case and you would still love to have that homemade taste, look for fresh cookies in the Food Lion Bakery department.

Recipe Tip: No black disc-shaped sprinkles on-hand? Feel free to use black cake decorating gel instead to create the ghosts’ mouths and eyes.

From fruity snacks and a savory entrée to a few spooky and sweet desserts, you now have five Halloween recipes you can make with your family as you celebrate the fall holiday together. And since they’re all made with five ingredients or less, you can rest assured that they’re quick and easy to make - and low-cost too. From our family to yours, we hope you have a fun and safe Halloween!
